Project Management Attitudes 101 - The 10 Ways a Great Project Manager Thinks
I liked it but if it was explained with a few examples then understanding would have been great. you should have examples in leading and lagging KPIs
You made some excellent points regarding leadership, thanks. I've been a PM and now Safety Director going on 49 years. A key factor to being a leader is understanding the authority you do and don't have within your position. Is management proactive or reactive. Is your team willing to accommodate suggestions based on years of experience after observing them operate inefficiently. Oftentimes the answer is "no" because change is a dirty word. However I can't stand idle when superintendents and workers are allowed to willfully violate OSHA regulations and management doesn't support my field observations for corrective actions. Do the team members understand their role? As the Safety Director my team is comprised of 6 construction crews. The superintendents vary in age but none of them understand their role within the company. I've tried listening, they reject training, much to their amazement I've jumped into situations when help was needed, I was a troubleshooter for a company that sent me to analyze problem jobsites, I'm not a dictator but a learner. To be a good leader you must know the subject, be willing to listen/learn, and make adjustments to the plan. Learning becomes a habit for life or you're no longer an asset. As a leader you must learn the boundaries between leader and friendship. At times difficult decisions are required. If you aren't familiar with HOP Human & Opertional Processes, I encourage you to learn about the process on RUclips. It works.
Thank you for the light and informative video! Cost: Uncertain. May happen Issue: 100% Certain. Will happen or already happened
You're very welcome.
I love this video
Thank you.
if there are subprojects set within a project "not linked" can one baseline the subproject ?
I am not sure I understand the question. But I think you are asking whether you can baseline one part of a project plan. The answer will depend on what your software allows. But, in principle, yes, I think so, in that you can create alternate baselines with different configurations. But, having done that, you must select one of them to measure progress against, or you will have two alternate representations of status - which is not just confusing, but also allows for misrepresentation and therefore, poor governance.
Project Managers frequently need to deal with contract negotiations. My own first experience of this was negotiating Heads of Agreement (or Heads of Terms). And, before we started, I had to ask my boss, 'What are Heads of Terms?'

Yes indeed: Greetings.
❤ Excellent! Clear, Cathy and easy to follow!!
Thank you!
For the last 100 years, this was called a "to do list".
I agree with you... mostly. It depends on whether you view a To DO List as a list of things you will do (a Will Do List) or of things you could do (a Could Do List). I would argue that your To Do list should be a Could Do list and you then create a Will Do list each day, when you plan what you want to achieve. A Product Backlog is like a Could Do list and a Sprint Backlog is like a Will Do list.
@Onlinepmcourses That's what you call a To Do list with an extra column or two. I think this first began with scratching cave walls. Just having some fun wirh you all in good spirit, and your video is good. My point is, orgs spend time thinking redefinition of simple trivial concepts is going to change their productivity while the issue holding them back is always people who can't write the to do list or management that can't understand the to do list. The problem is never how you wrote the to do list.
@@mback12000 Ha-ha. I like intelligent critique. Yes, orgs do spend time thinking redefinition of simple trivial concepts is going to change their productivity. But the concept of a backlog, while not new, gave project managers a new way to think about an old idea. Sometimes, gving something a new name earns it new (and deserved) respect and attention.
It's a great video, but please whiten your teeth.
Thank you. But really... that's your comment?
Contingency and risk… I thought one method was to chart a matrix of 'likelihood' against 'severity' to give each scenario a score, perhaps 1 to 3 on a R-A-G scale. Q: does this have a name?
Yes, indeed, we do commonly plot risks onto a likelihood vs severity/impact chart - see ruclips.net/video/xXV_gjtXMSk/видео.html. I am not sure there is a specific name for this chart.
This has really helped me, thank you!
Fantastic!
First of all, thank you for all these fantastic videos, Mike. I've been watching a lot of them recently as I look to transition out of teaching (in recent years doing leadership roles within schools). Do you have any advice around breaking into a scrum master or project management role without any hands-on experience of the methodologies that employers require you to have in job descriptions? I'm poised to do a certification and am wondering if this is all I'll need to start applying for jobs with a hope of landing one.

Quite an amazing concise explanation of estimation....
Thank you very much.
There is no such thing as Waterfall project management and has only recent currency due to its projorative use by some agilists - as suggested in the video. I understand why the confusion. ALL projects Start, Do stuff then Finish, but that isnt much of a life-cycle. HOW they go about this is another matter. There is NO SINGLE life-cycle that all projects must follow, but a huge variety of adaptations appropriate to a project. Therefore Project management has NEVER been defined by ANY life-cycle, there is way more to project management than that. Just say PROJECT MANAGEMENT, then adapt to the needs of the project, the organisation, the team, the individual and even to the moment. Oh and by the way, the latest bit of nonsense is Hybrid project management, quite without foundation.
I agree with you all the way... until your comment about hybrid. I agree that the term may be superfluous, but the idea of drawing from different traditions to form an approach that fits the circumstance is so important that giving it a name is more helpful than a hindrance, in my view.
@@Onlinepmcourses Thanks Mike I concur about hybrid. the term is being abused to supposedly introduce a new approach. Whereas project professionals have been hybridising - adapting for decades. Which also makes a nonsense of so-called (and alledgley) unwieldy 'traditional' project management. Project professionals dont do more management than needed...and they always have. A key lessons for aspiring professionals. My view is that we should just show what good PM looks like and ignore vague additional terms. In the end its just........project management, done well or not.
Fantastic content as always. Thank you. Your clear and measured speaking style gives me confidence in what you are saying. And what you are saying aligns with my values and actions as a PM so I have confidence I’m on the right track.
That's great! Thank you very much!
Thanks for the good explanation! It helps!

This is a great video Mike. One of the best explanations that I’ve come across. I’ve been both a Change Leader and a transformation Lead. They were indeed very different roles, requiring very different tools and skillsets for success. As a change Manager I worked at a tactical level mostly with those within the business. Whereas when I was working on Major transformation it required mainly strategic activities with far more interaction with senior leadership and then translating to actions at a tactical level. Both are great technical roles. 🙌👍
Thank you very much, Nicola. I think you highlight nicely how many options are available as part of a project professional's career. And, if we stay flexible and grab opportunities, we can get a very broad experience that allows us a very broad professional perspective.
Really like the simple and easy explanation - engaging as well. I tried my hand with Gantt charts, and found it a bit easier to map out things using this Gannt chart maker from Creately, or with similar software.
Thank you.
To be honest, looking for a tool, for mechanical engineering filed (not software)...
I don't really understand what you are asking. Can you be more specific?
intro music so loud hahaha
Yes, it was louder back then. I was still learning the very basics of video sound. I think I get it better now (?).
More histories, please! My take on this is to see how design management, as adopted in British architecture in 1963, has influenced project management, which of course has always influenced business. And how the UK Government introduced a five-step contract procurement process into the H.M Treasuries Gateway programmes. That's now aligned with the eight stage design management frameworks most typically used in construction, but I don't really know how to find out more about it. An archaeology of documents!
Unfortunately, I am not a historian either. Researching the details of now-defunct frameworks is not what I am good at. So, this overview is likely to be my only historical video for a while. If I can think of another wide-interest historical topic, then maybe. Otherwise, this summary is my historical gift to the community.
Thank you a lot for this video I found it easy to understand but very concise and complete explanation.
You're very welcome. Thank you.
Every company in the planet should bring spaces and time to employees and teams to discuss and learn about this so important topic. Great content! Thanks a lot! ❤

Number 9 on your list: Otherwise known as controlling the narrative. This is what people with an agenda do.
Controlling the narrative is indeed what people with agendas do - slides that summarise and interpret the data and control the narrative. I completely agree - that's why we need to avoid leading the debate, and offer raw data.
Thank you so much for information!
You're very welcome.
This was awesome. Thanks
You're welcome.
Great definitions, here. I simply assumed 'transformation' is the process of 'change'. So many aspects.
Thank you. Yes transformation is the process of change. But, is it something more? Does a caterpillar *just change into a butterfly? We say it transforms. A celebrity might change their style, but transform their persona. I could change my car or transform my lifestyle by abandoning it. As I say in the video, there is no absolute right answer to this. Thank you for your comment.
The details are giving me life.
I need to know, is this just membership or do they Offer a PMP course?
PMI is the owner of the CAPM and PMP courses (and others). They have their own self-paced course. There are also independent providers of courses. Some of those are registrered by PMI as ATPs - Approved Training Providers. These all use PMI-approved materials and syllabus. Others run the training as they choose. Some are every bit as good as ATPs (and may ffer better training). So, there is a wide range of choices. Go to the PMI's site to learn all about what they can offer today. Declaration: I have no affiliation with PMI.
Continuing our series on unravelling fine distinctions, heres one that confuses a lot of people: the difference between change and transformation. What do you think?

Indeed!
Based on my four decades of experience in the IT industry, I believe that successful projects hinge on effective Requirements Engineering. Regardless of whether you use Agile or another methodology, the core goal of any project is to deliver a solution that meets customer requirements. Unfortunately, this crucial aspect is often overlooked. When I started my career in the early 80s, rigorous training in Requirements Management (RM) was mandatory for writing program specifications, design, coding, and testing. Today, this practice has diminished, with many preferring to spend three times the effort fixing issues during testing rather than investing in proper RM upfront. If you're interested in discussing this further, we can have a separate conversation. Here are some reasons why Requirements Management is so critical, based on my personal experience: - It is essential for meaningful estimation. - It is crucial for Risk Assessment. - It forms the foundation for solution design. - It guides the coding and testing processes. Despite its importance, RM is often undervalued by project personnel. Additionally, it's important to understand that projects deliver capabilities, not benefits. Benefits Management falls under Program Management, and this connection between Project Management and Program Management is frequently misunderstood in the industry. I appreciate your work and passion, and often reference your videos to others. Keep up the great work, and my best wishes to you.💐💐🙏
